Easy Summertime Snack jam-packed with nutrients for your toddler
Nothing says summer quite like naked time and a plate filled with colorful, tasty, nutrient-packed berries. Well, at least for a toddler who's not otherwise playing in the water. I'm loving a berry medley as my go-to snack for Ryan lately. In between breakfast and lunch, and after we get his little brother down for a morning nap, we play barefoot in the yard and enjoy berries. That's our thing as of late! I know, it's so simple (just wash and serve!) but sometimes the simplest choice is the best choice and especially so for a busy mama.
It's also a satisfying choice on so many levels. Ryan gets to be in the yard and play, which is his favorite thing! And, he's outdoors and surrounded by nature, which is mama's favorite thing! Win, win! He's getting vitamin D and learning to respect and appreciate plants (work in progress!) and animals all while he gobbles up his favorite fruits.
And, if your kid is like mine, he doesn't sit still and loves to be active, even while he eats. So, he'll sit to enjoy a few berries and then proceed to jump, skip and hop with his toys of the moment all over the yard while I chase him and pop berries into his mouth. Fun!
At the end of our little play date, he's a content little boy with a full tummy... at least until lunch time. And, shhhh don't tell him, but he's also just consumed high concentrations of vitamins and nutrients to make up his fruit serving for the day.
Additionally, some berry fun facts:
- Strawberries are an excellent source of potassium, fiber, many B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese, iodine, folate, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium and copper. Good stuff!
- Raspberries are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber, and promote skin health and strengthen the immune system
- Blueberries are a brain booster fruit and one of the best sources of antioxidants that help protect against heart disease and diabetes and reduce cell damage that can lead to cancer
And with all that, mama is content too. A hot sweaty mess in the end, but content... at least until screaming little brother wakes up from his nap.
