13 Maternity Staples for a Classic, Modern Style & My Shoot with Guy Galstyan
A couple of weeks ago, I did my maternity photoshoot for this pregnancy with Guy Galstyan. You’ve all heard me talk about working with Guy before, like for our Holiday photos back in December. She is also one of our partners for Happy Mom Conference this year and will be there to capture all the magic, which I’m really excited about!
The Story of My Maternity Shoot
I was actually going to skip this altogether this pregnancy. I did take photos when I was pregnant with Ryan and then again with Leo. But as I mentioned in the blog last week and in the recent newsletter, there’s a lot going on in my life right now. With conference planning, baby prep, the home remodel and everything else, the maternity shoot just felt like one more thing.
It was actually my husband who convinced me to do the shoot. He said, “You will probably regret not doing it. I know you would want to capture these memories.” He really pushed me to do it, and I was reluctant just because I’m so tired and wasn’t able to figure out how to schedule it in, but I’m so glad I listened to my hubby. I got myself there and did it, and Guy made it so easy and such a nice, seamless experience. We decided to do a studio shoot this time instead of shooting at my home or outdoors.
The theme for the shoot is something that I came up with. I wanted it to feel very raw and authentic and to really spotlight my pregnancy and how I feel. I didn’t want any sort of extravagant shoot or to be outdoors; I just wanted it to be private, just me and Guy taking photos, and to capture the pregnancy in a really raw way. I was barefoot in all of the shots and just in basic clothing with a very simple style. I wanted black and white to be another overarching theme in keeping with the raw-ness and just focused on what the subject is (in this case, pregnancy and it being a beautiful thing). I’m excited to share these photos with you!
I also want to share some staple maternity items with you guys. I'm actually not a fan of maternity fashion in general; I tend to pick things that are not actually maternity wear and then turn them into maternity wear for myself…so I just go a size or two up, or wear materials that are stretchy and loose. So some of what you see in my recommendations aren’t even going to be maternity wear at all. I hope this is helpful for any of you mamas who are expecting! And if anyone wants to book a maternity shoot in the LA area, definitely check out Guy Galstyan. I highly recommend her!
