My Postpartum Story + 10 New Mama Essentials
Being a mama to a newborn again has been tiring and challenging for sure, but it’s also been the most beautiful blessing for the whole family. I have to say, so far, it’s been easier transitioning from two to three little ones than it was from one to two… I don’t know what it is. Whether it’s because I’m more chill and not as nervous with everything as I was as a first or second time mama, or because there’s no time to sweat the small stuff with three little boys to love on and care for… but, “ask me in a month” is what I’ve been telling everyone who’s been asking me how it’s going. Max is so new he’s basically eating, pooping, and sleeping. In a month, when we know more of Max’s personality and demeanor, I’ll be able to speak to how life really is as mama of three.
Remembering to self-care
I’ve learned over the years how important self-care is as a new mama, so I haven’t let myself fall into the trap of forgetting me. It’s easy to put yourself last, especially as a first time mama when you are so consumed by the love and newness of your first baby. You don’t feel how it is hurting you to put your needs aside day to day, but it piles up like layered bricks and one day it hits you hard how much you’ve allowed your life to be taken over by motherhood, and then it’s harder to come out of that place; that funk.
Being a third time mom, I’m more self aware and know what “little” things I need to do to stay healthy in my mind, body and soul. For example, I know now not to put the pressure on myself to get back to pre-baby weight right away like I did after my first pregnancy. I know now that it will take time and that’s ok, and I should allow my body to heal and take the time it needs to get back to where it was before pregnancy. The body change just doesn’t affect me like it once did.
Also, I know for me, I need to get out of the house and feel the sun and just be outdoors. Being cooped up in the house just doesn’t work for me. So I’ve made it a point to get out for short periods of time before I need to be back to nurse Max, or get out to grab takeout or make a grocery store run with Max in tow.
Being a newborn mama for a third time is so beautiful because you get to experience all of the newborn love and excitement again, and you have the experience of the first two babes. I’m in a place now where I know myself a little better and can listen to my needs in this season because of it, and I know when it’s important to prioritize myself and when I need to prioritize little Max.
As I think about how important it is for us as mamas to take care of ourselves, especially in the early months, I want to share with you all the new mama essentials that keep me energized and comfortable in this time.

New Mama Essentials:
Stā Body bodysuits
These amazing bodysuits were designed as a solution to all the problems tank tops and normal bodysuits suffer. It’s designed to secure and smooth while still being comfortable, and to pair with anything from casual jeans to business attire, for all shapes and sizes! This body suit is great to pair with a favorite blouse over it.
I’ve partnered with Stā Body to give away one of their high-quality bodysuits! To enter, go to @elin_abad_ on Instagram and follow the directions in the giveaway post! Good luck, mamas!
Dairy Fairy Nursing Bras
Tired of your old, boring nursing bras that just never fit quite like a normal bra? Dairy Fairy’s bras are so beautiful and comfy too! They’re so great for both breastfeeding and pumping, and are definitely designed with the mamas needs in mind. My fave is their “Ayla” lace bra for it’s delicate and sexy design. I’m also trying their newer “Mia” which is their leak-proof design and I can report it definitely does the job - no leaks! Plus it’s on sale right now!
Commando Seamless Hipster Panties
Whether you’ve delivered vaginally or via c-section, it’s so important to have comfortable panties that provide necessary coverage. I love Commando’s seamless hipster panties as a comfortable and full-coverage option. I highly recommend getting them in black or dark colors if you’ve had a vaginal delivery, because you know it can get messy down there in those first few days (or weeks) postpartum!
Bamboobies Nursing Pads
Especially in those first months as a breastfeeding mama, leakage can be a serious issue. I love Bamboobies’ nursing pads because they’re so soft and fit comfortably in my bra and absorb a lot of excess milk when needed. They also have bigger ones for overnight or extra heavy leakers! Plus they’re reusable and easily machine washable, making them perfect for you eco-friendly mamas!
Maintaining your health is the last thing on your mind when you have a newborn to take care of, but it’s so important! Plus keeping up with your own nutrients and vitamins helps your baby if you’re a breastfeeding mama. Here are my three vitamins necessities:
Your pediatrician likely encouraged you to give vitamin D to your infant, but did you know it’s important for you to take as well? It’s important for bone health and preventing all kinds of diseases, plus it enriches your breastmilk for your little one.
Your pregnancy may be over, but prenatal vitamins are still important to take! I love the Garden of Life prenatal multivitamin because it’s a certified organic whole foods vitamin.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids such as those found in Fish Oil supplements like these are helpful for preventing baby blues and are an essential daily vitamin for new mamas.
Even if you’re just walking around the house or the yard, comfy footwear is a must! Here are some of my faves:
Rachael Harrah Shirt
I love this short sleeve blouse by Rachael Harrah. It’s the perfect everything top because it really does go with everything! The button-down style makes for easy nursing access, and the loose, comfy fit is ideal postpartum.
This White Cotton Courier Shirt by Madewell is another great top and closet staple. Like the Rachael Harrah shirt, it’s a loose-fitting button-down style, which is so ideal postpartum!
These sweatpants are so high quality and you can even dress them up. It can be hard to get into jeans or tighter fitting clothes postpartum, so I’m all about wearing a dressier top with my fave sweats. Did I mention they’re on sale right now?!
I love the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. It’s great for any skin type and provides quality sun protection while being invisible, weightless, scentless, and it works so well with makeup!
Is there anything I missed that you absolutely could not live without as a new mama?
