When I first started dreaming up the Happy Mom Conference, I put together a mental list of power women who I'd LOVE to have speak at the event. So when Amy Jordan, founder of WundaBar (my FAVORITE post-baby workout!) agreed to be part of our health & wellness panel, I was so excited that I teared up a bit.

Amy Jordan is a Pilates visionary, entrepreneur and inventor, but her proudest accomplishment is being the mother of two, Ryre (7) and Ella (4). 

Back in 2006, during an especially difficult time in her life, Amy began to practice Pilates regularly. Her workout soon became her passion, and she left her career as an Entertainment Marketing Executive to open her first high-energy Pilates studio in 2008, WundaBar (in German, "wunda" means "wonder").

Fueled by her continued study and the desire to share wellness through movement far and wide, Amy transformed the traditional Pilates scene in 2010 when she sketched out the now-patented WundaFormer machine while on a flight. This machine combines the most popular Pilates tools—the Reformer, Wunda Chair, Ballet Bar, and Jump Board, into one incredible machine.

Balancing career & motherhood

I asked Amy how motherhood influences her business and work, with two young kids, 9 studios, and the new, online streaming Wunda-at-home program.

“There's far less time to ponder projects and ideas when you're chasing little ones, so I've become quite adept at running a lean meeting and also at delegating to a superstar team to help complete whatever needs doing. Being a mother has helped me learn how to cut through to the important idea or task more quickly.”

One of the big focuses of the Happy Mom Conference this year is the conversation around career and motherhood, and it’s clear that Amy has learned ways to invite more "balance" into her life through relying on her team and more efficiently bringing new ideas to life.

“I used to drive myself batty with this attempt at a good balance… but the reality is that some days are all Mom-duty, some days are all Wunda-duty. And on my radar are the occasional days of all Amy-duty but those definitely don't get thrown into the mix as often.”

With young kids who require loads of attention and time, Amy has made the conscious decision that rather than forcing a balance with them between motherhood and work, she will do the absolute best she can for her children—while getting help in her work to give the best to WundaBar (even if it’s not from her own two hands.)

“I'm ok with my focus being heavily on my children for now, as I know these years already zoom by.”

Even though she doesn't get to have Amy-duty days often, I asked Amy to tell me about her self-care routine. She shared that it usually includes Pilates, but she also enjoys hiking or hot yoga from time to time. Acupuncture and chiropractic care are also high on her list of healthy habits, as well as keeping a fuel-oriented diet.

As a new mom in the middle of project design and prototypes of her WundaFormer machine, Amy learned that the best advice to follow was to give yourself grace.

She also found that the best way to find herself again after pregnancy was through movement, especially Pilates. She'd exercise late in the evening after the baby went to bed and get back home by the time she needed to "dream feed". Those precious moments of movement by herself helped her connect to her body and be more present for her little ones.

Amy likes to remind the WundaMamas who join her classes at WundaBar Pilates that they aren’t alone during those 2 a.m. feedings and 4 a.m. diaper changes. “You’re doing mother’s work,” she says. 

When I asked Amy about what she likes most about being a mom, she said that so many things come to mind, but the best is their little hugs. When they’re so close that you can smell them and feel their warmth, when you feel totally connected to your little one. 

On the flip side, she says that motherhood can be so bittersweet. They grow so quickly, and even those moments you don’t “like” (diapers, anyone?) you can still find funny or happy memories to look back on fondly after they’ve grown out of that phase.
